America has an aging population. While it is true that people suffer more from incontinence issues as they age, women of all ages have been known to pee a little when they did not mean to. This is one reason that more leak proof diapers for adults have hit the store shelves in recent years.
Now Buzzleandnbsp;is reporting on a new product, put out late last year, for women who may worry about this issue. THINX has developed, not just leak proof diapers for adults, but a kind of underwear that is considered to be pee and period proof. While most women are not embarrassed to talk about dealing with their period, many are more reluctant to talk about peeing and even fewer are going to admit that they think they may need adult diapers for sale. The fact of the matter is that many women, as many as 33%, will pee when they do not mean to from time to time. Sometimes it happens because they are going through menopause or are pregnant but other times, it just happens.
Last October, THINX launched Icon, this is considered to be “pee proof underwear.” It is not exactly the same thing as leak proof diapers for adults but is close. The THINX campaign around the new underwear was designed to showcase how women of all ages can experience a little urinary incontinence from time to time. The models in their ad campaign range in age from 27 to 69. The company has taken an open approach to this subject matter.
Kejal Macdonald, the vice president of marketing for THINX, told Buzzle, “When THINX launched, we had a ton of women writing in and asking if they could use them for absorbing a little pee. When we looked into it, we realized since the two types of liquid are pretty differentandmdash;blood is more viscous and released slowly, while pee is thin and released in a single spurt. This meant what we designed specifically for periods didn’t necessarily meet all the needs for light bladder leaks. So we dashed off to our panty workshop and engineered a prototype specifically for leaky bladders.”
Miki Agrawal is the chief executive officer for THINX. She was traveling overseas and got the idea for the period proof underwear when she saw women in the developing world who did not have access to feminine products. Now, more than six years after she launched her company, the products are used by women all over the globe.
Macdonald says, “We rounded up a rad group of leaky ladies to test them out and the response was overwhelming. We figured we’d get feedback on how the underwear performed, but the women ended up gushing about how life-changing it was to be able to wear a beautiful pair of underwear instead of pantyliners. That was when we realized we were onto something really huge.”
Macdonald notes that the THINX and Icon products are made from different materials. She says, “Since THINX and Icon are each crafted for their specific absorbency needs, both the fabrics we use and the way they’re made are different. Icon needs to be able to absorb pee extremely quickly and keep women feeling totally dry, so the inner-most lining is a high-performing, fast wicking fabric. The leg holes of Icon are bonded, a fancy name for heat-sealed, instead of sewn to ensure they’re totally leak-proof. Lastly, in addition to the anti-microbial layer on both Icon and THINX, Icon has an additional anti-odor treatment, for obvious reasons.”
The Icon underwear comes in several styles. They include hi waist, thong and bikini. If someone has been using disposable bed pads for incontinence, Icon underwear may be something that will be able to help them. They plan to introduce more styles. Like leak proof diapers for adults, the underwear holds up to five teaspoons of pee. The thong version holds a little less. It can only take in three teaspoons. The company plans to put out a version of Icon underwear that will be able to hold up to ten teaspoons at some point.
One thing about Icon underwear that is clear, this is good news for women of all ages.
