When it comes to the health of your family, it is important that you are prepared for any situation. Having the right contact information in case of emergencies or if you have medical questions can mean the difference between getting fixed up promptly and losing precious reaction time that could have made a difference. Establishing a relationship with your primary care physician is crucial to the continued care of your family. You should be going to your doctor for your regular visits to maintain your health, but having the information for other local services can be just as important.
Why you should be knowledgeable about local urgent care services
There are plenty of unexpected things that can pop up along the way as you go about your daily life. There are incidents that occur without regard to how the timing might work out for you or the hours that your family doctor’s office are open. In the case that you require medical attention when your doctor’s office is not open, you should have a plan for getting your medical needs met. There is, of course, always the option of heading to the emergency room, but not all medical needs are emergencies on the level that require a visit to the often costly ER. And even those cases that might seem to ride the line of an emergency can often be attended to in some advanced urgent care centers.
Services that could be available to you when your doctor is not
Whatever your medical need may be, you will likely eventually consult your primary physician about continued care and the best course of action. But should you come across the need to get to an urgent care center, you will find that you will not be left wanting of proper medical attention. About 60% of these centers have wait times that are less than 15 minutes to get in to see a doctor. One survey conducted by The Urgent Care Association of America reflected this wait time, and also showed that about 80% of total visits are about an hour or less in duration. Around 65% of these centers have a physician at the location at all times.
The reasons why one might head to an urgent care center are various. From a cold that has worsened to a condition that needs stronger medication, to dizzy spells, to more serious maladies, these centers are fully equipped to deal with most medical issues. In fact, about 70% of them are able to provide intravenous fluids, and around 80% are equipped to handle bone fractures. It is comforting to know that if the need arises, there will be someone to provide the treatment that you or your family members are seeking.
Getting new medical services set up when you move
Moving to a new neighborhood, city, state, or even country can be overwhelming. There is so much to think about, from getting moved in, unpacked and organized, to making sure everything in the home is in working order, to getting yourself set up within the community. There is probably a new job in the mix, maybe new schools, and the list of local services that you will want to become familiar with seems endless. But this is where networking, word of mouth, and good advice come into play. If you are moving to a new area but have friends or family members who already live in the area, they will become your go-to resources. Find out what doctors and medical centers other people trust and rely on, and set out to make that connection and build your own relationships with the people offering these valuable services.
If you are completely brand new to the area and do not yet know anyone, don’t worry. You might be surprised how quickly you develop new relationships, and how willing people are to help out with advice about the place that they live. Making your new home everything that you need it to be is definitely within your reach. And finding the right medical services is just one aspect of that.
